“I appreciate you relaying those condolences, Lady Edwards. After all, would I be a gentleman were I not concerned for someone’s well being? As for me being disappointed how can I not be? When one is in the presence of a lovely lady and wishes to introduce her to all the most powerful people in London only to find she cannot it is only natural. However I understand the duty of a daughter is to care for her father.”
Were you not a lovely woman I could care less about the state of your father, Lady Edwards. As far as I am concerned he is an obstacle to obtain you.
“You believe that if you told him of the event that he might allow you to attend? Well, now I must admit that is an interesting change of demeanor. If you like I may speak to him personally and present my cause.”
How interesting that you have suddenly changed your attitude toward me, Lady Edwards. Could it be that I have already left a mark upon you?
“Oh please do not take offense to what I said about questioning that you were a part of the upper class. I was merely making a statement for I as of yet had met an upper class woman who had not at least drank wine. And at all the social gatherings I have attended it is common practice. However it would appear that your family has quite different standards. As for a woman being taken advantage of well…yes that is a possibility of course. However I am one who believes that a young lady partaking in drink shows just how refined she truly is. To drink the same as a gentleman is quite an honor. However do not fear Lady Edwards I shall not force you to drink if you do not wish it.” He paused. “But…I would welcome me to show you that it is something that can be enjoyed if you just try?”
He could not help but smile as Fiona took in everything around her with a sense of awe. It was obvious that she had never been to a place like this before. For if she had any upper class lady would not have reacted as if it were her first time. Strange.
“I am pleased that this place meets with your standards, Lady Edwards. London does indeed have much to offer.”
“Ah, Sir Pennington!” replied the server at the front. “Welcome! And I see you have a lovely woman with you.”
“Yes, this is Lady Edwards,” Gabriel replied back. “And since she has never been here before I wish to have your finest table.”
“Of course! Please follow me.”
As Gabriel escorted Fiona through the dining area and behind the server he leaned toward her slightly.
“The dancers are quite hypnotizing are they not? Please do not say that you cannot dance, Lady Edwards. For an upper class lady who cannot dance is unheard of.”
If she did say that she could not dance then Gabriel would be even more suspicious then when she said that she did not drink.

Fiona nodded as she heard his words, a bit surprised that he actually believed her. After all, her brother would probably never allow this man to get close to her. But, the ill father routine worked wonders when your father was already dead and the person you were talking with probably had no clue of who you really were. Well, at least she didn’t think that he knew, for all she knew he could be pretending. Well at least he wasn’t Mercer.
“The chances of him allowing me to attend such an even though it a bit slim.” She replied. “As for you talking to him personally, I believe that I may have a batter chance at convincing him, if I spoke to him myself. After all he might refuse to see you…no, I believe that it is best for me to convince him.”
Sir Pennington, I hate to tell you this, but you are not stepping one foot inside my home. So, go back to your master and tell the newest Beckett that.
“It’s not my family who happens to hold different standards…but myself. As for taking offense to what you said, I hold no ill bearing. After all, I understand that women drinking wine at social gatherings happen to be a common thing.” She paused for a brief moment, this man was exactly like Cutler Beckett, but this one was a bit too creepy for her tastes. This one gave her nothing but bad vibes, which was a bit different then what she felt around Beckett and his lapdog Mercer when they met. At least this would be the last time that she saw Gabriel Pennington, at least she hoped so. Besides, her beliefs were that a woman who allowed herself to drink, left themselves open to being taken advantage of, and their innocence taken away from them by men who are not their husbands.
Enjoy what, you taking advantage of me? I promise you that is something that I’ll never enjoy.
“I’ll…I’ll consider it that is the only answer that I can give you.” She replied before nodding at his words, even though she knew that she had reacted too strongly about being in a place like his. It wasn’t her fault that Port Royal was dull and boring and didn’t have places like this.
As Gabriel leaned towards her while he escorted her through the dining area, Fiona looked at the dancers for a brief moment before smiling. She had danced with her brother, Andrew Gillette, and Theodore Groves in Port Royal during social gatherings. “Of course I can dance, Sir Pennington.” She then looked at him. “And, you have a strange way of asking a woman if they would like to dance.”

“A bit slim?” Gabriel asked. “Well at least that means there may still be the possibility and that is enough hope for me. If you believe it is better that you speak with your father then so be it. It is true that I am a stranger and may not receive me very well for wishing to take his daughter to Yorkshire. However I must admit that I am disappointed that I cannot see your lovely estate. I do so like partaking in saying other people’s manors.”
What you do not realize Lady Edwards is that I have influence upon fathers such as yours. But if you wish to be coy I accept such a challenge.
“Ah so it is you who holds such standards? Well at least I now know that your family is not different in that matter as I was beginning to question their…etiquette. And yes it is common for young ladies to partake in wine at social gatherings as well as expected. You see in doing so she shows that she is no longer a mere child. And it makes a very good impression upon possible suitors or if she is married her husband. In refusing to drink one might say it is much like an insult to the host and a disgrace to her family’s reputation. Forgive me for being so bold but I am merely trying to explain the importance of such a thing.”
If you have never drank wine before you could prove to be a most interesting woman indeed, Lady Edwards. Perhaps I shall be the one to take your innocence for wine? How delightful.
“Well, if you have never drunk wine I would consider it an honor to introduce you to it, Lady Edwards. But of course I shall not do anything that you do not wish.”
Having to seduce a woman without the reassurance of wine could actually be an entertaining challenge in itself and be worthwhile for its reward.
“Well, I am relieved that you at least know how to dance. And I was not certain if you would agree to dance with me since you appear to be a little intimidated by me. Do not try and argue, Lady Edwards for I can see it in your demeanor and your eyes. I can assure you that there is nothing to fear from me.”
That is of course unless you lie to me or choose to betray me.
Was the man stubborn, hard of hearing, or just plan stupid? There was no way that she was going to come to that funeral, or surround herself with Lord Beckett supporters. She fought the urge to roll her eyes at his words, and felt a bit of disgust at the pit of her stomach. More like hr took advantage of innocent women behind their father’s backs, after tricking them into believing that they could trust him. This man was possibly a bigger pervert than Lord Beckett was. Besides, her brother would never let this man take her anywhere, if he was still alive.
“Yes, sadly enough I happen to be the only member of my family who shares that belief. But, then I remember that I am nothing like those other young ladies. Not to mention that it doesn’t take something like drinking to prove that you are a no longer a mere child. Now, you should forgive me for being bold, but you do not know the type of men who live only for taking advantage of those young ladies, and wish for their senses to be lowered before attempting such a thing. Which also happens to be the reason why most of those young ladies even up married to cruel men or to men who would rather be around their mistresses than their own wives.” She then sighed. But, I forgot who you work for.” There was a slight trace of coldness in her voice as she stated those words.
I know exactly how you truly are Gabriel Pennington, because of who you work for.
“We shall have to wait and see Sir Pennington. If such a thing does occur then it will happen, after all several men have tried over the years to get me to do such a thing, and they have all failed.”
And, you shall fail as well.
“You’re of course correct, I am somewhat intimidated of you, Sir Pennington. But, it’s only because, of the things that I have heard people say about those who happen to work for Lord Beckett…even if you are working for a different one. I am certain that she would want you to be exactly like the ones who have worked under the departed Lord Beckett, in the past.” She then let out a brief sigh. “Do not tell me that I am wrong, because even though you are not showing it, I can tell just how dangerous you truly are. I have learnt over the years to be a great judge of characters.”
Not to mention that Mr. Mercer tried to trick me into trusting him as well the first time we met, before he ended up being the cause for my brother working under Beckett.
“Yes, well if that is truly what you believe then you also do not embrace tradition,” Gabriel replied back. “For drinking wine is a tradition that has been passed down for centuries. It is considered a time of passage in a young woman’s life. For as a child she is not allowed to indulge in such a luxury. And such a thing is part of the proper etiquette of a young woman. However no doubt that you learned this in finishing school.”
If you are indeed of nobility as you claim.
“Bold? I must admit that most proper young ladies would not speak in such a tone but…it hardly offends me. However I should inform you that there are other gentlemen or men for that matter who would not be so understanding. And I hope that you keep in mind that not all men share the characteristics that you mentioned, particularly me.”
And you should know that I have killed a woman for insulting my honor in such a way.
“You forgot who I work for?” Gabriel asked raising his voice slightly. “Lady Edwards are you trying to place me in the same characteristics as Lord Cutler Beckett? For if you are then I am indeed insulted. Just because I serve someone does NOT mean that I am like them. Sometimes we do what we do Lady Edwards to survive. There are many things that I do not agree with in regards to Lord Cutler Beckett but what does that matter in regards to my duty to him? I am not he, Lady Edwards.”
You are to compare me to that wretch? That bastard who gives all gentlemen a terrible reputation! You are not leaving good impressions upon me, Lady Edwards.
“I would hope that you shall not say such a thing again to me. For I am willing to forget this little….discretion if you do.”
Fortunate for you that you are a woman of exceptional beauty.
“Oh I am indeed up for a challenge where so many other men have failed, Lady Edwards.”
And that would even make you more of my possession.
“At this time I serve Lady Beckett due to the….sudden demise of her husband. However it does not mean that I completely share her beliefs. I am merely doing what is best for her and The East India Trading Company. And if her interest does not benefit The Company then I must ignore it.”
I must do what is best for The East India Trading Company for it is the one way that I can make my influence for The Crown.
“It is true that I can be a dangerous man in the proper circumstances, Lady Edwards for that is part of the reason I am hired for my…services. However I only do so when it is required. At this particular time…except for what I mentioned earlier you had not given me reason to be upset with you. And…even if you have it is not enough to consider me a danger to you.”

Finishing school...a place to train young girls to be nothing but mindless puppets, and act like idiots in order to find a husband. Man, am I lucky that my father hated me, and that the relatives that he sent me to live with kept me from becoming one of them.
She remained quiet, and didn’t mention whether she went to finishing school or not...besides it wasn’t any of his business. Besides, drinking wasn’t exactly a luxury that she wanted, after all she had witness it somewhat with her father before he finally did the right thing and sent her to those who would actually care for her.
“Then those are the type of men who believe that a woman shouldn’t have a mind of their own, remain silent, and allow themselves to be paraded around like they are nothing but trophies. Any man who does not value my opinion is not worthy of knowing neither me...nor my family.”
You really don’t expect me to believe that do you? Oh please, I’m not that stupid. In fact I’m beginning to think that I would rather be in Lord Beckett’s company than yours.
“Yes, I do place both of you on the same page. For I believe that like I heard about him, you expect any woman to fall at your feet and allow you to seduce them. As for you being insulted...” she paused to let out a small scoff. “You have allowed yourself to be sullied by that man’s reputation, therefore it does matter.”
And, who said that it was Lord Beckett that I was comparing you to. I was comparing you to his little lapdog, Mercer.
As she heard his words, Fiona turned a cold sharp glare in his direction, and she fought the urge to slap him. She was a Norrington, and he should not be allowed to talk to her in such a manner. If her brother was alive then she was certain that he would make him pay.
“Then be prepared to fail, Sir Pennington.”
And, be lucky that I don’t have my dagger.
She shook off what he said about Lady Beckett, but there was something about the woman that said that she would probably be worth meeting. But, she would never let this man know what she was thinking. There was a slight chance that the woman would show up in London, and that would be when she took that chance.
“Meaning you were hired by her husband to kill anyone who caused her harm.” She then shook her head. “I have of course also heard of the other who worked for Lord Beckett, and about the stories about the man’s true purpose for working with Lord Beckett. So, then one would wonder exactly why he would need your services, when the other was probably more capable of doing the job?” She then paused. “Everyone is a threat, Sir Pennington, even you.”
Yes, tell me exactly why Lord Beckett has you guarding his wife other than the other lapdog that I know as Mercer.

I see that you have not answered my question, Lady Edwards. That is indeed most curious but I shall allow it to pass….for now.
“Well, I must certainly understand what you are saying, Lady Edwards. However unfortunately in Society that it is not the instance and a woman must accept that if she is to remain with a good reputation. Not to mention if she wishes to someday acquire a husband. I would come to believe that your father would also know this and be concerned that this daughter has such thoughts?”
I am merely trying to teach you, Lady Edwards hence you avoid embarrassment or worse. Even if for some reason you are not a lady of nobility you are still lovely and I am intrigued by you.
Gabriel then let out a chuckle. “Is that so? You believe that you have me all figured out merely by meeting me is that it?” He leaned toward her slightly. “I do not expect every woman that I meet to fall at my feet, Lady Edwards. Nor do they ALLOW me to seduce them. It is not my fault that ladies flock to me like a bee to honey. My….my reputation has been sullied? Oh, I think not, my Lady. Lord Cutler Beckett is dead and therefore no longer my concern. He matters NOT to me.”
And I shall continue where he left off. I shall far exceed him as a man of nobility and businessman. And men like your father shall bow to me as shall you.
“Fail? Oh that is hardly a word in my vocabulary, dear Lady. However challenges are something that makes us grow stronger.”
And I shall NOT fail with you, Lady Edwards. This I vow.
“That is correct in that I do kill others who would threaten Lady Beckett’s safety. The man that you speak of was protecting Lord Cutler Beckett and therefore not able to be here in Yorkshire. And…we are….were much alike Mister Mercer and I which is why I was hired in his absence.” He paused. “And just why would you consider me as a threat, Lady Edwards?”
Even though some of what you have said has made part of me wish to strangle that pretty, delicate neck of yours.
he was doing a terrible job getting back on her good side, and a wonderful job at making her wish that she could just slap him. It was because of the fact that she would not be forced not to speak her mind that made her decided not to get married. It happened to be that part of her that her brother liked, because it reminded him of their mother before she died. The only time he hadn't listened to her was when it came to Elizabeth Swann. "It's not my fault that I refuse to act like one of those women who do not speak their opinion, or allow themselves to marry a man who will only cheat on them or make them completely unhappy." She then frowned. "As for my father...he does not like it, but he also knows that I have no plans to EVER marry. He also knows the reason behind such a decision."
Fiona narrowed her eyes as he heard her chuckle. He was going to end up completely on her bad side after this alongside Sparrow, and the Turners. She ended up moving away from him when he leaned towards her. Did he actually believe that she was going to believe a single word he said? However, it was a good thing that he did not suspect that she actually had met Lord Beckett before. If Mercer as a perverted old man, then the one standing with her was a perverted stupid git.
"You know, I might've believed you, if you didn't blames those same ladies for such a thing happening I hate to tell you this but that sort of activity is NOT going to happen between us. As for your reputation, believe what you will, but everyone involved with that man has had their reputation sullied, even if the man has died." She then crossed her arms in fron of her chest. Could this man be anymore arrogant? "Then that will have to be a word that you will have to learn, Sir Pennington. Because you will end up failing."
She then frowned again. "So, you are saying that it is okay for one person to take the life of another, for any reason at all." She shook her heard after asking that. When she heard him say that he was like Mercer she froze, well at least that explained why her instincts told her not to trust this man at all. "And, to answer your question, because I am always right about who I happen to consider a threat."
She looked away from him. "This was a mistake...after we eat, I will make arrangements for me to return home and you can go your own way, Sir Pennington."
Before I get my hands on a weapon and kill you. Because I am not sure that Lady Beckett knows how much of a threat you are.
“Actually it is your fault, Lady Edwards. Being a part of the upper class one must learn to abide by its rules and conform no matter what they may think. And of course there are many parts of it that one may not like but it is who you are dear lady. Not to mention not all men are as you claim.”
And what is that reason, Lady Edwards?
“No plans to ever marry? That is a rather drastic decision is it not? Your father has every reason to be upset for he only wishes for his daughter to never have to worry about her life because she shall have a husband to provide for her. Is there truly any crime against that? And what daughter would wish to break her father’s heart?”
And what woman would not wish to marry unless she was trying to hide something, Lady Edwards?
“Activity between us? And just when did I mention such a thing, Lady Edwards? I have done nothing more then be a perfect gentleman have I not? I was not aware that such behavior would put one under scrutiny or judgment.”
And you are causing much anger in me, Lady Edwards which is very dangerous. Perhaps that loose tongue of yours needs to be cut out?
“Lord Cutler Beckett does not worry me, Lady Edwards. I am merely in his employ and nothing else. Though I must admit that I am curious to know why you feel so strongly against my employer.”
Does it have something to do with this secret of yours? And failure is not a word that is a part of who I am.
“If it means to protect someone from those who would do them harm, yes. And if it is a situation in which it is either your life or someone else’s. Surely if a man wished to kill you, you would not simply allow him to without a fight?”
I am not willing to just let you slip away from me, Lady Edwards! No I am NOT.
Gabriel turned and gently turned her face toward him even though it was difficult for him to put force in it because of the hatred he was feeling. But he knew better then to show it for fear of her running off. “Dear Lady Edwards, I of course respect your words. However I do wish for you to state just what I have done to make you feel threatened. Have I hurt you in any way? Whatever it is please tell me for I do not wish this…occasion to be spoiled. I believe that and explanation is the least you can do for me.”

As she heard his words, Fiona started to think that stabbing this man in the stomach would be an easy death, and not that he deserved. You really are an arrogant pig. She then shook her head. "Ah, so I was right, you would prefer your...scratch that any woman you happen to meet to be meek, quiet, mindless, made to believe every word that came out of a man's mouth, and not to mention not speak her mind. I am none of those things, and I will not simply change who I am...not for you nor for any other man. I will not pretend to be something that I am not."
She wasn't about to tell this man that the only man that she would've considered marrying was her own brother. Only because it was wrong on so many levels, and would also end up breaking several laws. If she hadn't been related to James Norrington then she would've taken his mind completely off Elizabeth Swann.
"Drastic or not, I am content the way I am, and content not to be in one of those loveless marriage that I have seen in Society. As I have told you, I will not reveal why I have made such a decision, only that I happen to be content with it. And, to answer your question, no it is not a crime for my father to want such a thing. But, I will not be forced to marry. After all, even if a father worries about their daughter's security. What sort of father would force their daughter to marry?"
You're beginning to anger me more with everything you say, Pennington. Continue and you'll learn that I am more dangerous than you believe that I am.
"You do not have to mention it. I've been around men who happen to thing more with the lower portions of their bodies than with their heads. Even though you put on the role of a gentleman, you have the same air about you that they do."
And, you need me to drop a pitcher of ice-cold water on you to cool you off. Or better yet, I could always just drive a sharp object through your hand.
She was hoping that Lord Beckett came back from the dead as a ghost and haunted this man for the rest of his life. It would serve this man right. The more time she spent with him, she was actually starting to prefer Beckett and his lapdog.
"He took someone from me, and I will never forgive him...or anyone who happens to be employed by him. That is all I will reveal to you."
"But, there is a huge difference. Because, if I were forced to kill someone, it would be merely to protect my life. Whereas, if you killed someone, you would earn money for doing so. As you mention before you are hired to kill for profit. For example if you were to attack me, and I was force to kill you then that would be self-defense. If someone were to offer you more money than your previous employer, then you would end up betraying the one you were employed by."
He'll probably deny that he would do such a thing, which is why I wonder if Lady Beckett knows how dangerous this man truly is?
Fiona turned her heard and moved out of his grip. She wasn't that foolish not to believe that he wasn't dangerous, despite the facade he was putting on. Did he really believe that she was that stupid? She also knew that she couldn't tell him that the more time she spent in his presence, the more she wanted to kill him, or deal him bodily harm. "You have done nothing, I just feel that it is best for us to part ways once we are finished here."

“The woman that I described my dear Lady is what a female is SUPPOSED to be,” Gabriel replied back. “Society is the one responsible for those specifications not I. And if you chose to go against it that is of course your affair but you must take the possible consequences that shall follow it. I personally do not know of one gentleman who would agree with your personality. As for your father I despair for him. Truly you do not understand what may come from your….resistance.”
Perhaps I should find this father of yours or report him to Bedlam? Ah yes….your father being placed in a place such as that may persuade you to change your ways.
“A father would force his daughter to marry if he truly loved and cared for her. And he would know that is for her own good. How would you care for your ailing father without money from a wealthy husband or suitor?”
Or that particular gentleman may kill your father.
“My Lady it is not proper to speak to a gentleman in such a way,” Gabriel replied back in a curt tone. “A woman has been placed into a jail or Bedlam for such a gesture. You must truly understand that in this Society you are neither the ruler nor the creator of its laws.”
You are truly testing me, my Lady! All I need to do is snap my fingers and I could have you placed into a room where you would never see the light of day!
“You say that Lord Beckett took someone from you? Forgive me for saying so but you are not the first person to have had such a thing occur. And as I told you I may work for Lord Beckett’s household but that does not mean that I agree with everything he believes. His wife Lady Beckett is quite different in certain ways. I am sorry for your loss but I still do not appreciate being placed in the same way as Lord Beckett. Nor do I appreciate being judged before I have proven myself.”
I must find out who this person is that Lord Beckett had killed. I have difficulty believing that he had ordered such a thing without good reason. Perhaps if I find out this secret it may also reveal more about who you are?
“Yes, it is true that I live my life through money. For unfortunately without it one shall die. It is what separates us from the rats. Life is not always a pretty thing my Lady. But trust me in that you would change your mind about money if you were living in the streets amongst all the other vermin. But contrary to what you believe I AM loyal to my employer….provided that they pay me of course. I shall not betray them unless they give me reason to.”
Or of course the price was right.
“You wish to part ways? I see. Very well once we leave here I shall return you to your father. However it would be quite rude if you did not at least allow me to fulfill my obligation and buy you some food.”
Even though it shall be quite difficult for me to keep any food down now because of how you have insulted me!

Even though she knew that they were discussing a father and a family life that hardly existed, Fiona couldn’t help but feel insulted and angry. “Well, then you are clearly with the wrong woman. Because I will not remain silent when I have something on my mind or wish to speak my own opinion.” God, she just wanted her sword…or her dagger…or just about anything that would cause serious harm to this man. “Then it is best that I do not wish to be tied down because I refuse to be controlled by anyone.” Fiona then moved away from him. “So, what next are you going to insult the memory of my mother?”
Be warned, if you do that then I will make certain that you regret doing so, Sir Snake.
And, whatever she did to him would be entirely his fault. Not hers. It was not her fault that he was exactly like all those other men who simply wanted a lovely silent arm ornament that he could show off to all of his friends. Men who only wanted to chance their wealth or place them higher in Society. She thanked god that her brother was not like those mean. At least he cared enough to teach her to protect herself and fend off creeps. Why she had wanted Gabriel Pennington to be different from those men, she didn’t know? But, she should’ve expected it from someone who worked for Beckett.
Fiona had to bite her tongue to keep from revealing that there was no real father, therefore no chance of her being forced into marriage. Not to mention the fact that she could always return to Port Royal if she believed that she was in any sort of danger. “How I will continue my father’s care, is not the business of someone that I have only just met. But, I will not marry or involve myself with a man that I care nothing for.” All she had to continue to repeat to herself was that she would not kill this man around all these people. He was completely the blame for that, because anyone except her brother who worked for Beckett only deserved death.
The moment she heard his threat though, Fiona considered him lucky that one her brother was dead, and two that he couldn’t return from the dead. Only because she knew that her brother would’ve killed this man for threatening her. “Ah, it is so nice that the men of this world believe that the women that refuse to be treated like puppets deserve to be threatened.” Fiona sarcastically said before adding. “Be careful, not to threaten those who might have powerful allies, dear sir. Or, it could very well be you in that very same situation. After all, the only thing you know about me is my ailing father.” Her tone wasn’t curt, but filled with only coldness. “Besides, ill or not. Do you truly believe that my father will stand for someone to threaten his precious and only daughter?”
And, I will be long gone before you ever get the chance. For I still hold the upper hand and the person you know me as doesn’t even exist.
“And, let me say that I will never trust or associate myself with anyone who worked for such a man. No matter how many lives that Lord Beckett ruined before his death.” It seemed as though this man would end up enduring the brunt of her fierce temper, which was entirely his fault. But, she wondered if this Lady Beckett was the type of woman to threaten to hang people for no reason at all, and force people to betray their loved ones. Not to mention that she didn’t for a second believe that he meant his apology. It was for a person that she had crated and not at all directed towards her brother. “ I suppose, I should thank you for saying that.” She then sighed. “By your words alone, you have already told me that I need to know about you, and I pity any woman who finds herself tied to you for the rest of her life.”
Good luck trying to convince me otherwise, Sir Snake.
“Don’t you mean at the expense of others.” She was lucky that her mother had left both her and her brother some kind of inheritage upon her death, which allowed her to be able to live here without any problems…up until now. Unlike this man she would never soil her hands with the blood innocent people. “No one deserves to be killed because a person gives the order for such a thing. Those in power are allowed to frame just about anyone they wish for crimes they didn’t commit. Just for the simple fact that they exist. Do not even pretend to tell me that you’ve never killed anyone, just because your employer wanted him or her out of the way. And, in doing so, you have forgotten one of the Ten Commandments. Thou shall not kill.”
More and more, you give me reasons to compare you to Mr. Mercer.
“Perhaps you didn’t hear me, but I believe I said that I shall provide my own way home. But, you are right in that I should allow you to treat me to lunch.”
Just hope that I can get through this without causing you bodily harm, Sir Snake.

“Lady Edwards, it may possibly be true that I am currently with a woman with an….unusual manner,” Gabriel replied. “I do not care what you say in the privacy of your home or when you are not around me. Of course I do not agree with how you wish to speak your mind but that is your choice. However, I do have one small request and that is for this time that we are in public that you respect me and keep those opinions to yourself. Once you leave my presence you may speak whatever you wish. I would hope as a Lady that you would honor my request?”
So, now we shall see if you truly are a Lady. Of course I still intend to find out who you are.
“Insult? It was not my intention to insult your father, Lady Edwards. I was just merely concerned for him. You do not realize what Society can do to a father who has the beliefs that you have detailed to me.” He paused and then gently took her hand as she walked away. “However if I have insulted you in any way then I am truly sorry and ask for your forgiveness. No longer shall we speak on this manner.”
Besides, I have already shown and argued my aspect of this conversation. Whether or not you choose to take heed of it is your choice.
“I apologize for raising my voice to you, Lady Edwards. It is has been a very trying day for me and it was wrong of me to push that onto you. It is true that one should be careful of whom they anger because of their allies. That is a very valid point, Lady Edwards.”
But I never expected to hear it from a woman’s lips.
“What if I am able to prove my loyalty to you? To show that I am nothing like Lord Cutler Beckett or his…other associates. I respect how you feel about Lord Cutler Beckett but I would like to be given the chance to prove to you that I am quite different from him. At least offer me that opportunity and then you may make your conclusion. And…if you take the time to know me you may take back those words concerning a woman being with me. There are many ladies who would envy you in your position right now. Even now they are staring at you.” He gestured with his hand toward the people in the restaurant.
You will be my greatest conquest, Lady Edwards. And if I have to win you with kindness then so be it. I have never allowed a woman to escape my grasp.
“One does what they must do to survive in this world, Lady Edwards. Unfortunately those in power rule Society and you can either choose to be their ally or enemy. I would personally not like to be a victim. And I do not question what I am ordered to do as it is not my duty. If I wish to collect my fee then I must do what is required without question.”
It is taking every ounce of my being to not drag you out into the back alley and teach you a lesson, my dear Lady Edwards.
“Ah, a Christian lady no less. It pleases me that your father believes that attending church is important. However there are some who quote the bible for their own needs and yet know little of it. I am not speaking of you, of course. It is true that I have broken a commandment. At one time in my life I was just such as you. However….there came a time when I believe God turned upon me and therefore I chose to forsake him.”
To me God is indeed dead.
“I am pleased that you have graciously accepted my lunch invitation, Lady Edwards,” Gabriel replied as he took her hand gently and placed it over his. “And it is my intention to prove to you the gentleman that I am. I…hope that we can leave this earlier unpleasant conversation behind us.”
“Right this way,” the server replied as he gestured to Gabriel before leading them to a table. He then pulled out a chair for Fiona and helped her into it. Walking over to Gabriel's side he leaned in as something was whispered into his ear and then bowed before leaving.
Gabriel eased himself into his chair and then glanced over at Fiona. “I trust that this table is to your liking, Lady Edwards?”
