 Awkward Conversations (Tag Norrington)
« Thread Started on Dec 11, 2008, 11:10am »

A part of her simply just wanted to ignore the letter that Oliver had delivered to her a few days ago. After all, she had been avoiding her brother since he returned to Port Royal. She closed her eyes for a brief moment and let out a brief sigh. She had also been avoiding her brother's attempts to take to her after his return. It was his entire fault that she had to deal with Lord Beckett and his lapdog Mercer.

After reopening her eyes, Fiona placed her violin on her shoulder and prepared herself to start playing. She already knew that she wouldn't be interrupted who she was in here. In fact, Selece knew that she didn't like to be bothered while she was in here, which made it the perfect place when she wanted time alone. If she wanted to, then she could stay in the room for hours at least, or until she was ready to leave the room. During her brother's absence, and her meeting with Lord 'stick up his butt' Beckett, she had taken to spending more time here than she had in the past. Besides, if it wasn't for the fact that she knew that Beckett was having her followed, then she probably would've left this blasted place right after said meeting. However, she found herself taken by surprise when she heard a knock on the door, and with another sigh lowered her violin placing it back in the case. It would seem that she probably wouldn't get the chance to play at the moment.

She stood up and moved to unlock the door. As she opened the door slightly, she looked at Selece. "Lady...Norrington, I know that you don't like to be bothered while you're in here. But...but it's your brother, and he's insisting on seeing you. And, yes I told him that you were out, and he simply stated that he would wait until you returned."

As she heard Selece's words, Fiona frowned. She should've known that her brother would end up doing something like this. She then turned away from Selece, as if trying to decide what she would do. Her brother knew that she would only show exceptions to the "no interruptions" rule, only if showed up at her home. But, still that didn't mean that she liked it when he showed up without warning. Or, using the same tactic that she used, when he didn't want to talk to her. They were too much alike, and she only hoped that he didn't know about the whole meeting with Beckett.

A few second later, she ran her hand through her hair, before looking back at Selece. "Very well, tell him that I'm on my way down." She then closed the door after giving Selece her message. She would wait a few seconds more, before heading to the parlour, which was where he usually waited for her. Selece headed to where Norrington was sitting in the parlour. "Lady Norrington, will be down shortly, sir."

((hope you didn't mind me already having Norrie at Fiona's house.))

James Norrington

James Norrington had been a nervous wreck since returning to Port Royal from his adventures as a pirate on Jack Sparrow’s crew. He knew that he was no longer the same loyal and perfect gentleman he had been those years ago. No he had crossed the line in something that he had fought against for so long….piracy.

I have disgraced myself and the Norrington name.

Fortunately for him Lord Beckett had attended to him receiving a new wardrobe so no one in Port Royal could see him dishelved and filthy. As far as the citizens knew he had resigned his commission and simply fled for England.

And that is how it shall remain.

He had to admit that it surprised him when he sent for Fiona and she had not responded. It was true that they had had their differences at times but she had never refused to see him. Unless of course….she knew where he had been? Had Lord Beckett somehow told her? But of course the fact that he had not corresponded with her since he left wouldn’t help either.

Please understand that I did not wish to hurt you, Fiona. My dear sweet sister I love you more than anything.

James had made the decision to go see Fiona and not to leave until she agreed to speak to him. He knew his sister too well to know that she would be stubborn unless he became the same. His sleep had been anything but restful having not spoken to his sister yet. Now he would just have to hope that she would hear him out. He raised his head as he heard Fiona’s personal attendant enter the room and smiled.

“She will? Thank you. I appreciate you relaying to her the importance of this meeting.”

After leaving what she considered as her private sanctuary, Fiona made her way to the parlour where her brother would be waiting for her. A part of her wondered exactly what Lord Beckett had told her brother. She had simply guessed that James would be in Tortuga, but knowing Beckett the man probably twisted everything around to make it look like she had betrayed him. She didn't even know why she still cared about what he thought of her.

Because he's my brother.

But, she wondered if Beckett had used the fact that she was avoiding her brother to manipulate him against her. And, even if the man hadn't told James about what she told him, Fiona knew that she would never be able to reveal that little fact to her brother. Even if she had only done such a thing because she was worried about his safety. Still, a part of her didn't even despise her brother for leaving her to deal with Beckett alone. She was just hurt that he didn't have the nerve to talk to her before he resigned his commission and took off again.

One would wonder if I did what I did simply because I wanted you back home. Or, if I actually did it to protect you.

In all actuality, her brother probably knew more about her than possibly anyone in Port Royal. She made a stop to get something before she finally was where her brother was waiting she studied him without saying a word. There was something about his body language that for some reason told her that he needed this meeting, and in a way a part of her knew that she needed this as well. She smiled to herself before speaking and motioned for Selece to leave.

"You left." Fiona stated almost coldly. "I thought you had died during that blasted hurricane, and then after returning to Port Royal you resigned your commission and left. Governor Swann was the one who told me that little detail." After saying those words she aimed the rapier that she used during their fencing lessons and pointed it at him. "And, then Lord Cutler Beckett arrived in Port Royal, had me dragged out of my home, questioned me about your whereabouts, and threatened to place me in jail if I didn't tell him."

She wouldn't mention the part where she had offered to have Lord Beckett arrest her in her brother's place.

While James waited for Fiona’s appearance he began to glance around the parlor. To him it seemed like ages since he had been in his sister’s home. And it was at that moment that he realized it was because he had always been too busy with his services at sea. It was almost as if the ocean and his ship were his true home anymore. A smile then crossed his face as he saw a painting of a woman. She was almost identical to Fiona and had a soft look upon her face.

“Oh mother how beautiful you were. I can only hope Fiona shall carry on your name. How I wish you were here now to help me in this time of trepidation. Please understand that I did not mean to disgrace our name. I….I was confused and hurt from losing my crew. I merely wished to regain my honor in any way possible.” He let out a sigh. “I know that father shall be angry with me but….I had no choice. I needed to live so that I might protect Fiona. Only now….I feel as if I have sold my soul to the devil somehow and do not know if I shall longer be able to fulfill that obligation. Can you…show me the way….somehow…”

If any normal person had walked into the room and saw James Norrington speaking to a painting they would have thought him mad. He was not one to express his emotions openly and that included speaking about family. He had been closer to his mother than his father and had taken it very bad when she had died. It angered him that his mother had passed on while his arrogant father still lived. To him it just was not fair. And now his sister reminded him so much of the mother that he would have given his life for. The woman that he secretly blamed his father for her demise.
James then turned around when he heard footsteps behind him.

“Oh, Fiona it has been so long since I have been here. Such memories that it stirs within me. I do appreciate you seeing me in that…” He stopped speaking as he heard the coldness in her voice. “Yes, I…I did Fiona. However I did send a letter to you in regards to that. I could not come here personally but I did send a messenger. If you did not receive it I sincerely apologize. I would have told you myself but…I had very little time to carry out my plan.”

The hurricane…..

“Yes, well as you can see the rumors surrounding my death were indeed false. Although….I lost many good men on that voyage. It shattered me, Fiona. When I returned to Port Royal having to relay the news that many wives would be widows and children orphans I….I simply could not face it. I decided the best course of action was to meet with Governor Swann and resign my commission. The reason I did not wish to relay that to you was because….I did not want to bring you pain. I….”

His nerves instantly went on edge as he watched Fiona take out her rapier and point it at him. Instinctively he wanted to draw his own but suppressed it. This was his sister and she never had really been good at handling her emotions. He would just have to try and talk her down to prevent a fight like this from occurring.

“Fiona, I know that you are upset and you have every reason to be but trust me in that this shall not resolve anything. What I did to you was wrong and God forgive me that I cannot change what has occurred. I….”

What did she just say about Lord Beckett? My current employer did something to her?

“Lord Beckett did what? Fiona, I assure you that I knew nothing of this. He had no right to have you taken from your home by force nor did he have the right to threaten you to achieve what he wanted. He…” He paused. “Fiona, before we continue with this conversation I would like you to lower your rapier please. I find that rational behavior is much better achieved that way.”

How am I going to tell her that this very man is the one I have now pledged my service to?

As she listened to her brother, Fiona realized that all he was doing was giving her plenty of excuses. But, despite everything that he said, and the events that occurred, she knew the real reason why he had been in such of a hurry to disappear, and it was because he didn't want to see bloody Elizabeth Swann marry that blacksmith. She was sorely tempted not to lower her rapier. "I bet you told her why." She said coldly leaving him to figure out whom she meant. "After all, she was SO much more important to you than I was. I mean you chased after her like a lovesick puppy, even though you knew that there was a slight chance that she didn't feel the same to you. So, tell me did you really allow that pirate to escape because it was the right thing to do? Or because she wanted you to?"

She was hoping that in some way that her words hurt him, the same way his had after the events concerning Elizabeth Swann. Because, she was tired of feeling that he cared more for that bloody woman then he did about his own flesh and blood. She allowed herself to close her eyes for a brief moment before opening them again. Although she didn't lower her rapier, she moved a few inches away from him.

"Well, if having you standing here before me didn't prove that, then having Lord Beckett questioning me about your whereabouts did. As for your men, I know about them, and I also know that Andrew Gillette was believed to be one of the men among them. Do not forget that when you had him stand in as my protector at times. He had also become a close friend." She then sighed. "Pain...you didn't wish to cause me pain. Tell me, did it ever occur to you that if a warrant surfaced for your arrest that I would be the FIRST person that would end up questioned?"

As she heard his words, Fiona moved to sit down and placed her rapier on her lap. She didn't actually think that she would be able to forgive him for leaving her alone to deal with a man like Cutler Beckett. But, at least the man hadn't placed her brother in jail, or had his lapdog kill him. Still, she wondered exactly why such things didn't happen, and if her brother was now working for that man.

"I guessed," Fiona whispered under her breath. "I picked the most unlikely place where you could possibly be and simply told him that you had traveled to the Americas." As she said that, Fiona hoped that he wouldn't figure out that she had just lied to him.

“Her? What do you mean?” James asked with a confused look on his face. After a few moments he suddenly realized who Fiona was speaking of and sighed. “Fiona if you are speaking of Elizabeth Swann I did not send some kind of secret message to her. I merely communicated with Governor Swann and not his daughter. After turning down our engagement she is no longer my concern. I can assure you that you mean far more to me than she. It is true that I did have some feelings for her and thought they might fruition but alas they did not.”

But I cannot deny that I do still have those feelings for her even if she is promised to another.

“I allowed him a mere start and nothing more. After all he had rescued Elizabeth from drowning and also assisted in the…battle against those pirates. And….since he had escaped his hanging I thought it was the least I could do to show…gratitude for his assistance and bravery.”

[/i]I cannot believe I am saying this about Jack Sparrow! What is he a pirate or hero? Still I cannot let Elizabeth’s feelings on that matter to enter the decision that I made. But now I am pondering….why DID I allow him to live? Who precisely had made the final decision?[/i]

“I can assure you that I knew nothing of Lord Beckett venturing here to Port Royal, Fiona,” Norrington replied in a colder tone. “When I left I did not believe that England would send someone here to….attempt to re-establish order as it were. I merely wished to disappear and have everyone forget about James Norrington. And….I did not want to disgrace you so that you could continue on without my dishonorable and tarnished reputation. I suppose it was wrong of me to leave you but…”

Gilette? Oh Andrew how I had forgotten that you were a casualty.

“He was a very brave man and died valiantly. Did you not think that he was a good friend to me as well? When one is at sea it can be difficult and one needs someone to rely on in dire circumstances. It is that precise reason that I chose him to be your guardian when I could not. For unlike some men I trusted him. I would appreciate if you would not make it seem that he meant nothing to me for he did. How difficult do you think it was for me to watch the sea take him away?”

Try and calm down James. You must not make this situation worse.

“Fiona as I have stated I did not know that any of this would happen! Can you not understand that? You may find this difficult to believe but I care about your wellbeing very much. And now you understand just why I was so reluctant to bring you to Port Royal with me. How I feared that if anything happened to me that you might be drawn into it. You would have been safer in England.”

James let out a sigh of relief as Fiona took a seat in a chair and lowered her rapier. At least now they would be able to hopefully finish this conversation rationally. For the last thing he wanted this to end up with was a showdown between brother and sister. In the past he had taught Fiona to fight and didn’t want to test that theory.

“You guessed? Fiona….what exactly did you tell Lord Beckett? If you said that I went to The Americas then why are you whispering? And why do I sense hesitation in your voice?”

As she heard her brother ask what she meant, Fiona fought the urge to aim her sword at him again. Could her brother be even more stupid? As she saw the realization come on his face, Fiona placed her hands on her lap. “And, if you expect me to believe that you left your precious Elizabeth in the dark, then you’re probably a bigger fool that I thought you were. As for me meaning more to you…how do expect me to believe that?” It was the last part of those words that probably showed how hurt she really was.

And, yet I still tried to protect you from Cutler Beckett.

“A head start or not, you still allowed that man…that pirate to escape. You made no effort to try and recapture him that day, when you could’ve easily fired the fort cannons to slow down his escape after his antics to stop his hanging.”

Do you see what you’ve done brother? Now, you have me asking you the same questions that vile man wanted to know from me? Questions, I did not have the answers to.

Fiona nodded, if there was one thing she could believe, it was probably that her brother had no clue about Beckett’s arrival. “What about the fact that his spy was here in Port Royal, when the events with Sparrow occurred?” However, for a brief moment, Fiona closed her eyes and let out a brief sigh. “Did it ever occur to you that I might’ve left Port Royal with you, that if England sent someone to look into those matters that all they had to do was use me to lure you back to Port Royal?” She opened her eyes to look at her brother. “You should know that if it mattered to me, then I would’ve remained in England until our father decided to force me to marry some man that I didn’t love. If your reputation was all that meant anything to you, then I would’ve condemned you as a criminal as well. There is one thing that truly matters to me…”

She nodded at her brother’s question about what happened to Gilette. It was one of the reasons why she wasn’t going to force her brother to discuss that further, despite how much she wanted to. He had enough on his shoulders to deal with, and for once she wished that he would allow her to help with that.

“You’re lucky though that I didn’t discover your plans to leave Port Royal.” She then smirked. “So, tell me brother. Just how many times was I able to sneak aboard your ship without your knowledge?”

Fiona’s stomach dropped as she heard him ask the very thing that she had been dreading. “You already know what I told Lord Beckett, there’s no reason to repeat myself, brother. As for there being hesitation in my voice, you’re mistaken.” She then looked at the floor. “I simply told him the least possible place you could be found. Now, it’s time for a question of my own. Just where did my big brother decide to go after leaving Port Royal, and don’t you dare say England?”

Please, don’t press the matter further, brother. I already feel as though I betrayed you by telling that man about my belief about where you might be.

“My precious….” James let out a sigh. “Fiona, I told you that Elizabeth Swann no longer has any meaning for me. Once she made it clear to me where her heart truly belonged…I dismissed her as anything more than a friend. That is right, I said friend. One cannot have a relationship with someone through the years and expect it to simply end. I am loyal to Governor Swann and to his daughter. Miss Swann is now promised to William Turner and I wish them all the happiness in the world.”

Even though I know a poor blacksmith hardly stands a chance in supporting someone like Elizabeth. But…that is no longer my concern.

“How can you possibly think that, Fiona? After all the years we have been together? You are my sister and mean more to me than life itself. Why do you think that I brought you here to live in Port Royal? I wanted to make certain that you would remain safe and under my watch. On mother’s deathbed I promised her that I would always look after and protect you from harm. You know that I do not break my promises, Fiona. And I would hope that you would believe that I have fulfilled that promise to this day.”

Why are you saying these things to me, my sister? I would give my life for you!

“So, now I am being punished for actually showing empathy? Fiona, Captain Sparrow saved Elizabeth’s life! And in case you did not realize at that time I was serving Governor Swann! Had I NOT returned with his daughter do you not think he would have sent word to England? Or worse what if HE had been killed? You were not there and so cannot know just how important Jack Sparrow was in helping us win the battle against the pirates. I did not feel it right to condemn a man for saving my life and everyone else aboard my ship. If you wish to judge me based on that then I suppose that is your choice. I myself do not regret what I did. It showed….that I am human.”

Maybe part of me does regret it but I shall not admit it and it is too late.

“What? Lord Beckett had a spy here? Before I….” Norrington ran his hand through his hair and shook his head. “How can this be? The King had no reason to question my ability to preserve law and order. It was I who was responsible for closing down those rum runners and capturing pirate ships!” He could feel the anger slowly starting to build in him now.

Lord Cutler Beckett lied to me! He made me Admiral and made me believe that he was doing so on my merit! He knew that I had released Jack Sparrow and sent word to England!

Norrington raised his head and took on a calmer demeanor as he looked into Fiona’s eyes. He could truly see the hurt that dwelled there and it sickened him that he was the apparent cause of it. “Fiona, please understand that I could not have taken you with me.”

Particularly to Tortuga.

“Had I taken you away from Port Royal there would have been even more suspicion. I…cannot expect you to understand but….I needed time for myself. I admit that after the death of my crew that I was not thinking clearly and I cannot change what I did. I should have confided in you and for that I apologize.”

Please forgive me, Fiona. I did not wish for it to be this way.

“Sneak aboard my ship? What are you speaking about? Fiona, if you did such a thing that was very foolish of you! Do you not realize how dangerous a voyage can be?”

Oh I cannot even THINK what she may have seen if this is true! No, I cannot let her know how upset I am about this or she will think that I am hiding something.

“To tell him the colonies was indeed smart, Fiona. It is not uncommon for others to flee there from England.” James’ facial expression then changed. “What do you mean? Are you telling me that you do not believe that I fled to England? Why would you question me, your own brother?”

Have you been spying on me somehow, Fiona? What do you know?
